Goraxx: Bringing Skinner’s Psychedelic World to Life

Goraxx, the monster maker, mid-summoning | The art of Skinner

Skinner paints in color that refuses to sit still. Vivid and saturated, held together by dense, confident linework, his art draws from the '70s and '80s: old-school Dungeons & Dragons lore, Heavy Metal magazine, Jack Kirby and a lifelong love of monsters and dark magic.

On a flat page, that color does all the work. On a statue, it has to hold up across volume, shadow and light falling on the form from every angle. Goraxx was our first Skinner piece, so we had to figure out how to make that visual language work in three dimensions.

Our approach does not change from one artist to the next: the paint has to carry the artist's color, energy and line so the finished statue feels like their work, not an interpretation or an homage. With Skinner, that meant bringing his electric, psychedelic palette into sculpted form without losing any of its force. It pushed our painting process further than it had ever gone.

From Artwork to Statue

Every Skinner statue begins with the original illustration, but bringing that vision into sculpture is a craft of its own. The sculpt has to translate Skinner's forms and proportions into a physical object, while the paint brings his color and visual language into the finished piece. Skinner is involved throughout the process, from the early sculpt to the final paint approval, helping make sure the statue still feels unmistakably his. And if you want to see where it all began, the artwork that inspired this statue is still available as the Goraxx original art print.

Engineered to Be Painted

Clean paint starts before a brush touches the piece. Goraxx was sculpted with painting in mind: the statue is engineered in separate parts so each area can be painted on its own before assembly. You will not see that work in the finished piece. You will see what it makes possible: clean edges where colors meet, no bleeds and precise paintwork that holds up from every angle.

Painted by Hand

Skinner's linework is one of the defining elements of his art, and Goraxx carries a significant amount of freehand paintwork to capture it. The sculpt itself was developed with those lines in mind: where needed, details were etched into the surface, giving the paint a physical edge to hold and helping accentuate Skinner's marks. From there, our in-house painters worked across the sculpt with the original artwork as their guide, recreating those lines by hand.

The Paint Master

The paint master was completed entirely in-house by the House of Gog team, then photographed and sent to Skinner for approval. We asked him to have his first look filmed, and the camera caught his reaction as it happened. His words speak to the result better than ours could.

“Wow, House of Gog has completely blown my mind. This is above and beyond anything I have ever seen.”

From Paint Master to Edition

From there, each piece in the edition is hand-painted in our workshop using the paint master as the reference, under the supervision of our cofounder and art director Hugues Martel. We make and paint every statue ourselves, from prototype through production. No third party, no shortcuts.

Goraxx was our first chance to bring Skinner's psychedelic language into our own process while keeping the character of his work intact, and what we learned on this piece has carried into every Skinner statue since. The statue may be sold out, but our collaboration with him continues. The artwork behind it is available as the Goraxx original art print, and Last Stand of the Gin-Wog, his latest original art statue, is now open for preorder. Explore the full Skinner collection.
